Outset News
Outset Youth Action has over 1000 young volunteers, all
getting involved in great activities across West Sussex.
Here are some examples of what Outset Youth Action
members have been up to recently:
A Trip to the House
of Lords
Conservative
Shadow Minister for Children, Tim Loughton, joined young
volunteers from Outset Youth Action. They spent an
afternoon working on a mosaic project at Micks’ Garage
Community House in East Worthing. Tim returned to unveil
the finished mosaic. After this brilliant event two
Outset Volunteers had the chance to go up and visit the
House of Lords.

Altogether Sport
Inspired by the success of the Beijing Olympics and the
beginning of the 2012 London Olympiad, a group of young
volunteers both with and without disabilities decided to
set up and run the first vproject, ‘Altogether
Sport’. Held at the Olympos Leisure Centre, Burgess
Hill on Sunday 16th November 2008
‘Altogether Sport’ provided an opportunity for
disabled people to come along and find out about the
array of sporting clubs, opportunities and facilities on
offer throughout the County. Representatives from Riding
for the Disabled, SMART, Brighton and Hove Disability
Football and numerous others attended to talk to all
those who came along. The vproject team also put
on sporting activities in the main hall to entertain
everyone and provide opportunities to try out games
including basketball, boccia, ten pin bowling and
baseball.
In
total over 30 young people with varying disabilities
were involved in organising and running ‘Altogether
Sport’.
Volunteering is a brilliant way to have fun, meet new
people, gain skills and experience. Develop your
passions and interests and get involved in issues that
are important to you.
Tilgate conservation project

Outset Youth Action vinvolved team joined forces with
Gatwick Greenspace on August 13th and 14th
2008 to carry out a conservation project at Tilgate
Park, Crawley. The project was the brainchild of Outset
Volunteer Issie Stratton. The bad weather threatened to
call a halt to the event before the start as most
volunteers were caught in the torrential rain.
However, despite the rain young people from Crawley and
Horsham tackled invasive rhododendrons and made an
amazing difference to an area that had been overrun by
destructive plant life.

V Launch
Over 100 young people came together at Lodge Hill, West
Sussex on the 2nd August to celebrate the
launch of Outset Youth Action’s new v funding.
Not deterred by the bad weather an army of volunteers
including
Holly
Bachelor, Jasmine Bayliss, Lizzie Evans, Alex Mente and
Roz Bryan,
descended on the site to set up. Within a few hours
marquees were erected and activities from face painting
to first aid training, graffiti workshops to jewellery
making were up and running while Fusion, a fantastic
dance group from Felpham Youth Wing and Sam Albrow, a DJ
provided entertainment.
The centre of the day was a 5–a–side football
tournament, in partnership with WSCYVS. Ian Burlinson
and Craig Marshall were tremendous, stepping in at the
last minute to oversee the highly competitive
tournament. There was a close and enthralling final with
East Preston Youth Centre narrowly missing out to
Bewbush, Crawley.
At the end of a busy morning Jackie Beckford provided a
gorgeous Caribbean feast and for those still hungry
candy floss and ice cream was available all day!
